Mercury Energy Head Office Refurbishment
The Customer’s Requirement
For the refurbishment of the Mercury Energy offices in Greenlane, ITL Technologies was tasked with designing, installing and certifying a structured data communications cabling infrastructure that would adhere to several key conditions, whilst also being deployed in a working building.
The client remained in the building throughout the refurbishment, with floors being made vacant for the refurbishment of each floor, whilst also requiring the Datacentre to be kept operational throughout.
Our brief was to design and install a communications solution that could be run under a raised floor, was standards compliant, cost effective and reduced ongoing costs to the business, and enabled the business to make changes to the floor layout. ITL Technologies were also engaged to design the under-floor power to ensure separation and minimal 90-degree cross-overs between Communications and Power cables. A “Moves that can happen within a lunch-break” was the challenge put to ITL Technologies.
The system also had to accommodate not only IT network connections to IT devices but also both VoIP and digital phones, and allow for changes to be made as quickly and simply as possible
The Customer’s Solution
ITL Technologies were engaged very early on in the project, and were responsible for looking at solutions available in the market-place that would meet the Mercury Energy requirement, while also being able to be deployed quickly due to the tight timeframe.
The chosen solution enabled us to cable out each floor via the raised floor for both Structured cabling and Electrical, including cutting and laying a plastic cable pathway on the concrete floor, FD completion and testing, in 3-days which was the time allowed for the project from the raised floor being installed to the carpet tiles being installed.
With close liaison and a collaborative relationship with the Mercury Energy Project Manager, TE Connectivity’s Country Manager and the ITL Technologies design lead we settled on a solution that was designed for a Datacentre but would deliver the exact requirements for the project.
The solution agreed upon was the TE Connectivity MRJ21 cabling solution, the adaptability of the MRJ21 solution and the fact that we were working with a raised floor meant it was suitable for this project.
This system utilises a Multipair cable with proprietary pre-terminated heads which connect into either a 6-port or 12-port communications cassette, delivering 4-pair or 2-pair connectivity to each port depending on the specific needs of the connected device.
To achieve the “Moves that can happen within a lunch-break” ITL Technologies designed a cabling grid and installed MRJ21 and Power cables to set locations within the underfloor area, rather than just cabling to the Day-1 desk locations, knowing that over time the desks would be rearranged and expanded.
To support the objective of enabling “moves that can happen within a lunch break,” ITL Technologies designed a structured cabling grid and installed MRJ21 and power cabling to predefined locations within the underfloor area. This approach extended beyond cabling to initial (Day-1) desk locations, acknowledging that desk layouts would evolve and expand over time.
As-built documentation was provided detailing the locations of each cable under the floor measured off walls and columns so the client would not have to go looking for cables under the floor.
